Maiden’s Tower: The Legendary Symbol Rising in the Middle of the Bosphorus
Standing gracefully in the waters of the Bosphorus, off the coast of Üsküdar’s Salacak neighborhood, the Maiden’s Tower is one of Istanbul’s most iconic and mysterious landmarks. For centuries, this unique structure has witnessed countless legends, tales of love, and sorrow. More than just a lighthouse, it is a priceless symbol that reflects the very soul of the city.
The history of the Maiden’s Tower dates back to the 4th century BC. It was first built by the Athenian general Alcibiades as a small tower to control ships arriving from the Black Sea. During the Byzantine and Ottoman periods, it underwent several repairs and additions, reaching its present form. Throughout its history, the tower has served different purposes—as a defense fort, lighthouse, customs station, and even a quarantine hospital. Yet, it is most famously known for the many legends surrounding it; particularly the tale of the princess and the snake, which enhances its romantic and melancholic atmosphere.

Beylerbeyi Palace: The Pearl of the Bosphorus, Summer Residence of the Sultans
Welcome to Beylerbeyi Palace, rising gracefully on the shores of the Bosphorus in the Beylerbeyi district of Üsküdar, one of Istanbul’s true jewels! This is not only a magnificent structure but also a priceless work of art that witnessed the final era of the Ottoman Empire, served as the summer residence of the sultans, and captivated visitors with its breathtaking Bosphorus view.
Commissioned by Sultan Abdülaziz and built by Sarkis Balyan between 1861 and 1865, Beylerbeyi Palace stands out with its neo-baroque style. It offers a tasteful blend of European palace architecture and traditional Ottoman design. Especially during the summer months, the palace was used both as a retreat and as a venue to host important state guests. Many distinguished figures, such as Empress Eugénie of France and German Emperor Wilhelm II, were received here. The palace’s interior decoration harmoniously combines orientalist motifs with Western ornamental arts. Mats brought from Egypt, Hereke carpets, crystal chandeliers, and period furniture complete its luxurious and elegant atmosphere.
Beylerbeyi Palace also enchants visitors with its gardens, marble pavilions, and pools that merge with the unique beauty of the Bosphorus. The two small pavilions on the palace pier, known as the “Imperial Stables” and the “Stable Pavilion,” were where the sultans would arrive by private boat. Behind the palace lies a tunnel, built to allow residents to move safely and discreetly.

Anadolu Fortress: The Guardian of the Bosphorus, The First Step Toward Conquest
Welcome to Anadolu Fortress, rising majestically on the Asian side of the Bosphorus at the point where the Göksu Stream flows into the strait! This priceless heritage was the first concrete step of the Ottoman Empire’s determination to conquer Istanbul, controlling the strategic passage of the Bosphorus and standing tall for centuries.
Anadolu Fortress was built in 1395 by Ottoman Sultan Bayezid I (Yıldırım Bayezid) as part of the preparations for the conquest of Istanbul. Constructed long before its counterpart, Rumeli Fortress on the opposite shore, it was strategically located at the narrowest point of the Bosphorus to control ships coming from the Black Sea. For centuries, the fortress safeguarded the Bosphorus. Beyond its military significance, it also holds great value as one of the earliest examples of Ottoman architecture. Its solid stone walls and watchtowers reflect the engineering skills of its era.

Topkapı Palace: The Heart of the Ottoman Empire and Its Window to the World
Rising majestically at the pinnacle of Istanbul’s historic peninsula, where Sarayburnu embraces the unmatched views of the Marmara Sea, the Bosphorus, and the Golden Horn, Topkapı Palace is far more than an architectural masterpiece. It is a living witness to over six centuries of the Ottoman Empire’s glorious history. Commissioned by Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror in the mid-15th century, shortly after the conquest of Istanbul, this unique complex served for nearly four centuries as the imperial residence of the sultans, the administrative heart of the state, and the center of the empire’s artistic, cultural, and political life.
The palace was much more than a residence; it was a vast complex of interconnected courtyards and numerous buildings that reflected the intricate structure of the Ottoman administrative system and palace organization. The First Courtyard, known as the Parade Square (Alay Meydanı), functioned as a public space where people could approach the sultan, and where major ceremonies, parades, and enthronement celebrations took place. Beyond this, the Second Courtyard, known as the Divan Square (Divan Meydanı), was the brain of the empire. Here, under the leadership of the Grand Vizier, the Imperial Council (Divan-ı Hümayun) convened to make decisions that determined the fate of the empire, administer justice, and conduct crucial state affairs. This courtyard also housed important structures such as the Tower of Justice and the palace kitchens.
Today, Topkapı Palace is a vast museum complex welcoming millions of visitors from around the world. In every corner of the palace, visitors can trace the rich legacy of the Ottoman Empire. Of particular significance is the Chamber of Holy Relics, which holds items of immense spiritual value for the Islamic world, including the mantle, sword, and sacred beard strands of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). In addition, priceless treasures are displayed throughout the palace: the sultans’ garments and thrones, jeweled artifacts, one of the world’s largest diamonds—the Spoonmaker’s Diamond, Ottoman miniatures, manuscripts, porcelain collections, weaponry, and the fascinating exhibits of the palace kitchens.

Dolmabahçe Palace: The Jewel of the Bosphorus, The Final Splendor of the Ottoman Empire
Situated on the Beşiktaş shoreline on the European side of the Bosphorus, Dolmabahçe Palace stands as a unique structure that most strikingly reflects the late Ottoman Empire’s grandeur, its pursuit of Westernization, and its efforts toward modernization. Commissioned by Sultan Abdülmecid in the mid-19th century, this magnificent palace differs from the classical Ottoman architecture of Topkapı Palace. Instead, it embraces the strong influence of European art and architectural movements, blending Baroque, Rococo, and Neoclassical elements into an eclectic style.
Dolmabahçe Palace served as the residence of the last six sultans of the Ottoman Empire. During the Republican era, it was also used by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk as both a residence and a working space during his visits to Istanbul. Atatürk spent his final days here and passed away in the palace on November 10, 1938. For this reason, Dolmabahçe Palace holds profound spiritual significance in Turkish history. Today, as a museum, it welcomes visitors from around the world, offering them a journey through time with its rich collections, magnificent halls, and enchanting gardens.

Galata Tower: Istanbul’s Historic Beacon and Watchtower
Rising majestically on the European side of the city, in the heart of Beyoğlu on the northern shore of the Golden Horn, Galata Tower has greeted the city for centuries. This iconic landmark stands like a time traveler, bearing witness to the rich history that stretches from Byzantium to the Ottoman Empire and into modern Turkey.
Originally built in 528 by Byzantine Emperor Anastasius as a lighthouse, the tower took on its present form in 1348 when the Genoese reconstructed it under the name “Tower of Christ.” As part of the Genoese colony in Galata, it played a strategic role in the defense of the region and the control of maritime trade. After the Ottoman conquest of Istanbul, the tower served various purposes over the centuries, including as a prison, fire-watch tower, and observatory. In particular, as a fire-watch tower, it held vital importance during the era when wooden houses dominated Istanbul.
The tower’s cylindrical, lofty structure combines the strength and elegance of stone masonry. Its conical roof and surrounding balcony offer visitors a 360-degree panoramic view of Istanbul. From this vantage point, the minaret-studded silhouette of the Historic Peninsula, the deep blue waters of the Bosphorus, the curves of the Golden Horn, and the lively streets of Pera unfold beneath your feet. At sunset especially, the scene allows you to experience the city’s enchantment in its most striking form.
