Hacı Bayram Mosque: The Spiritual Heart of Ankara
Located in the Ulus district of Altındağ, right next to the Temple of Augustus, Hacı Bayram Mosque is one of Turkey’s most historic and spiritually significant landmarks. The mosque takes its name from the great Turkish Sufi and poet Hacı Bayram Veli, whose tomb lies within its courtyard. Built in 1427–1428, the mosque today reflects the architectural characteristics of the 17th and 18th centuries. In 2016, it was added to UNESCO’s Tentative World Heritage List, further increasing its international recognition.
The mosque is designed on a longitudinal rectangular plan, featuring a stone base, brick walls, and a tiled roof. Its interior stands out with a wooden ceiling adorned with hand-painted decorations, walls decorated with 18th-century Kütahya tiles, and an elegant mihrab. The painted motifs on the woodwork are unique examples of the artistic style of the period. Another striking element is its minaret, rising from the southeastern wall with two balconies. Throughout history, the mosque has undergone several restorations, one of the most comprehensive being carried out in 1714 by Mehmet Baba, a descendant of Hacı Bayram Veli.
The close proximity of the mosque to the Temple of Augustus symbolizes centuries of coexistence between different beliefs and cultures in an atmosphere of tolerance. Welcoming thousands of domestic and international visitors each year, Hacı Bayram Mosque remains an essential stop for anyone wishing to experience Ankara’s historic and spiritual atmosphere.

Roman Bath and Ancient City: A Journey Through Layers of History
Located in Ankara’s Ulus district, the Roman Bath open air museum is a significant archaeological site that sheds light on the city’s deep rooted history. Believed to have been built in the early 3rd century AD during the reign of Roman Emperor Caracalla in honor of the god of medicine, Asclepius, this massive bath complex was once one of Ancyra’s (the ancient name of Ankara) most important social and cultural centers. The ruins that have survived to this day present a striking example of Roman urban planning and engineering.
The Roman Bath incorporates all the features of a typical Roman bath complex: the palaestra (exercise area), frigidarium (cold section), tepidarium (warm section), and caldarium (hot section). It was a monumental structure that once served both the bathing and social needs of the people of Ancyra. Excavations revealed column bases, basalt pedestals for statues, and mosaic fragments, all pointing to the grandeur of the structure in its time. The hypocaust heating system and water distribution channels beneath the bath also demonstrate the advanced technological knowledge of the era.
This site is not only home to the remains of a bath complex but also showcases archaeological findings from different periods. Beneath the bath lie layers from the Phrygian and Roman eras. Notably, a section of the Roman road and various funerary steles and statues along its path provide valuable insights into daily life and burial rituals in ancient Ancyra. These remains offer visitors a unique perspective on Roman approaches to urbanization, public spaces, and social life.
The Roman Bath is in fact an integral part of the ancient city of Ancyra. After serving as the capital of the Galatians, Ancyra maintained its importance during the Roman Empire as the administrative center of the region. Located nearby, the Temple of Augustus and the Hacı Bayram Mosque together illustrate how different civilizations and beliefs coexisted on the same land for centuries. This site highlights that Ankara is not only a modern capital but also an ancient settlement with thousands of years of history.
