Sumela Monastery: A Legend Suspended in Time
Welcome to the Sumela Monastery, hanging on the steep cliffside overlooking the lush Altındere Valley in the Maçka district of Trabzon. This is not merely a building; it is a breathtaking example of fifteen centuries of history, faith, and harmony with nature. According to legend, in 386 AD, two monks, Barnabas and Sophronios, laid the first foundations of this monastery after discovering an icon of the Virgin Mary in a nearby cave. Over the centuries, with the support of Byzantine Emperors, the Empire of Trebizond, and Ottoman Sultans, the monastery grew and developed into an important religious center.
Much of the monastery's current architectural structure was shaped during the 13th century under the Trabzon Greek Empire. Sumela is an extensive complex carved into the rocks, including rooms, chapels, kitchens, and libraries, and it is particularly renowned for its unique frescoes. These frescoes depict significant scenes and saints from Christian history in vivid colors. The monastery continued to function during the Ottoman period, was placed under protection by decree of Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror, and was even supported with donations by some sultans. Until the population exchange in 1923, Sumela served as an active religious center, after which it was abandoned for a period.
Today, the Sumela Monastery you see has been revived through meticulous restoration efforts despite its challenging terrain. This magnificent structure offers visitors an unforgettable experience, not only due to its religious and architectural significance but also because of the stunning natural beauty of the Altındere Valley. As you explore this historical treasure carved into the cliff, you will undoubtedly feel the echoes of centuries past.

Trabzon Atatürk Mansion: A Mansion Blooming with a Leader's Memories
Located in the Soğuksu district of Trabzon, the jewel of the Black Sea, the Trabzon Atatürk Mansion rises elegantly among lush pine trees. This mansion is not just a building; it is a site of historical and spiritual significance, preserving the memories of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder of the Republic of Turkey. Built as a summer residence in the early 20th century by Konstantin Kabayanidis, a Greek-origin architect, the mansion reflects European architectural influences while harmonizing with the natural beauty of the Black Sea region.
The mansion’s exterior stands out with a blend of Art Nouveau and Neoclassical elements, dominated by white and pastel tones. Large windows, balconies, and the turreted attic complete its aesthetic appeal. The interior is furnished with period furniture, rugs, and personal belongings, offering visitors a journey back in time. Intricate woodwork, ceiling decorations, and detailed ornamentation highlight the elegance within the mansion.
One of the most significant aspects of the Trabzon Atatürk Mansion is that Mustafa Kemal Atatürk stayed here during his visits to Trabzon. Notably, he resided here during his visits in 1934 and 1937, making important decisions and resting. It is said that during his last visit to Trabzon in 1937, Atatürk wrote a part of his work Nutuk and prepared his will in this mansion. For this reason, the mansion holds immense spiritual value for the Turkish people.
Transferred to the state during the Republican era, the mansion has been serving as a museum since 1940. Today, areas such as Atatürk’s personal belongings, photographs, study, and bedroom are open to visitors. Beyond being a museum, the mansion serves as a living monument, witnessing Atatürk’s life and thoughts, and conveying the spirit of the national struggle and the atmosphere of the early years of the Republic.

Uzungöl: The Hidden Paradise of the Black Sea
Uzungöl, one of the unique natural wonders of the Eastern Black Sea, is located in the Çaykara district of Trabzon. Nestled among lush mountains and dense forests, this settlement resembles a picturesque postcard. As a landslide-dammed lake, Uzungöl offers visitors a magical atmosphere with its steep slopes, forested surroundings, and wooden houses reflecting on the lake’s surface.
The lake was formed when rocks falling from the slopes blocked the Haldizen Stream. This natural formation has created a distinctive ecosystem and an exceptional landscape in the region. Spruce and fir trees surrounding Uzungöl display countless shades of green throughout the year, while blooming flowers in spring and the yellowing leaves in autumn turn the lake area into a vibrant spectacle of colors.
Uzungöl is not only remarkable for its natural beauty but also for its local architecture. Wooden houses scattered along the lakeside reflect the region's cultural identity. Tasting the flavors of Black Sea cuisine, such as fresh trout and corn bread, at local restaurants is an essential part of the Uzungöl experience. The area also provides ideal opportunities for outdoor activities, including hiking trails, cycling paths, and paragliding.
