Gaziantep Castle: The Heart of the City and a Symbol of Resistance
Rising atop a high mound in the heart of Gaziantep, Gaziantep Castle stands as a living monument that bears witness to the city’s millennia-long history and, particularly, its glorious resistance during the National Struggle. With foundations dating back to the Chalcolithic period, it is believed to have first been constructed as a Roman watchtower in the 2nd or 3rd century AD, while its present majestic form was shaped during the reign of Byzantine Emperor Justinian in the 6th century AD.
Gaziantep Castle, with its irregular circular plan and 12 distinctive towers, reflects the traces of many civilizations from the Hittites to the Ottomans. Due to its strategic importance throughout history, it has undergone numerous repairs and additions, allowing it to survive to the present day.
The castle’s significance reached its peak during the Turkish War of Independence, particularly in the Defense of Antep. As a symbol of the city’s resistance against French occupation, the castle played a crucial role in this epic struggle and bore witness to the heroic efforts of the people. Today, the Gaziantep Defense and Heroism Panorama Museum, located within the castle, brings this legendary defense to life through immersive visual and auditory presentations, connecting the past with the present.

Bey Neighborhood: The Historical and Cultural Heritage of Gaziantep
Located in the heart of Gaziantep, Bey Neighborhood is one of the city’s oldest and best-preserved residential areas. With its narrow cobblestone streets, stone houses, bay-windowed mansions, and lush courtyards, Bey Neighborhood takes visitors on a journey back in time. Reflecting the multicultural fabric of Gaziantep, the district brings together authentic examples of both Armenian and Turkish architecture.
The history of Bey Neighborhood dates back to the Ottoman era, and during the 19th century, it became a vibrant cultural mosaic where Armenian and Turkish families lived side by side. The houses in the district are typically two or three stories high, built from local cut stone, and feature spacious courtyards that once served as the center of family life. Bay windows, wooden doors, and finely crafted stone details seem to whisper the unique story of each home.
Today, Bey Neighborhood has become a cultural hotspot, with many restored mansions transformed into boutique hotels, cafés, restaurants, and art galleries. Important museums such as the Gaziantep Toy Museum, the Atatürk Memorial Museum, and the Gaziantep Bath Museum allow visitors to closely experience the city’s rich history and culture. The neighborhood also hosts numerous artist workshops where traditional handicrafts meet modern art.

Rumkale: The Hidden Paradise of the Euphrates and Witness of History
In Gaziantep’s Yavuzeli district, where the Euphrates River meets the Merzimen Stream, stands Rumkale, perched on steep cliffs. With its unique location and thousands of years of history, it is one of Southeastern Anatolia’s hidden treasures. Accessible only by boat, this mysterious fortress captivates visitors with its breathtaking views and rich historical heritage.
The history of Rumkale dates back to the Hittite period. Due to its strategic location, it has been used and shaped by many civilizations throughout history. From the Assyrians to the Romans, from the Byzantines to the Armenians and the Mamluks, numerous empires have left their mark here. It is believed to hold a special place in Christian history; tradition says that John the Apostle (Saint John) once lived here and wrote a copy of the Bible. During the Crusades, Rumkale was also a significant stronghold, frequently changing hands due to its strategic importance.
The fortress is built directly onto natural rock formations, with much of its striking architecture now submerged under water. Within its grounds are the remains of churches, monasteries, water cisterns, and various other structures. Since the only access is by boat, tours along the Euphrates River offer visitors the chance to admire the castle’s magnificent silhouette up close while also exploring the surrounding natural beauty. At sunset, the reflection of the fortress on the waters of the Euphrates creates postcard-perfect scenery.
