Soli Pompeiopolis: History Rising from the Land
On the coast of Mersin, facing the gentle Mediterranean breeze, welcome to Soli Pompeiopolis, a city that carries the historical traces of a once magnificent port city! This is not just an ancient settlement; it is also a living witness to one of the most important port cities in history, harboring priceless treasures unearthed from the depths of the earth.
This unique city was first established around 700 BCE by Rhodian colonists under the name “Soli.” It gained fame as the home of some of the brightest minds of the ancient world, including the astronomer and poet Aratus. However, the fate of the city changed in the 1st century BCE when the Roman general Pompeius cleared the region of pirates and rebuilt the city. Honoring his own name, he called it “Pompeiopolis,” meaning “City of Pompey,” and the city flourished during the Roman era. Its greatest fame came from the Columned Street, which once extended to the ancient harbor and still impresses visitors today with its grandeur. This street was the commercial and social heart of the city. The artifacts unearthed through excavations reveal the wealth and significance of this ancient metropolis. Excavations have been meticulously carried out since 1999 under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Remzi Yağcı from Dokuz Eylül University.

In particular, spiritually significant sections such as the Lokman Hekim Mausoleum, Prophet Shit Mausoleum, and Prophet Daniel Mausoleum offer visitors a mystical experience.
