Izmir Clock Tower: The Symbol at the Heart of the City
Rising majestically in Konak Square, the heart of Izmir, the Izmir Clock Tower is one of the city’s most iconic buildings and symbols. Built in 1901 to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Ottoman Sultan Abdulhamid II’s accession to the throne, the tower adds an elegant touch to Izmir’s history and cultural fabric.
The tower was designed by the renowned architect of the era, Raymond Charles Père. Standing 25 meters tall with four levels, a clock is featured on each side. Reflecting the aesthetic principles of Ottoman architecture, the tower prominently displays Moroccan and Neoclassical elements. The four fountains at its base add further elegance, while the marble and stone craftsmanship showcase the artistic mastery of the period. The clock mechanism was gifted by German Emperor Wilhelm II.
Beyond serving as a timekeeper, the Izmir Clock Tower is an important meeting point that reflects the city’s identity. Over the years, it has been the subject of countless photographs, appeared on postcards, and become synonymous with Izmir. Combined with the lively atmosphere of Konak Square, the tower bridges Izmir’s past and present, representing the city’s spirit in the most vivid way. Today, it maintains its central location, close to bus stops, ferry docks, and the historic bazaar in Konak Square.

Izmir Kordon: The City’s Breathable Coastline
Izmir Kordon is an iconic waterfront stretching from Konak, the heart of the city, to Alsancak, running parallel to the Aegean Sea. As one of Izmir’s liveliest and most symbolic spots, the Kordon is an essential space for both locals and visitors, offering a place for recreation, relaxation, and social life.
The formation of the Kordon began in the late 19th century, with the modernization of Izmir Port and efforts to integrate the city with the sea. This wide promenade emerged through the filling and arrangement of old marshlands and quickly became the center of the city’s social life. With its broad sidewalks, lined palm trees, and elegant buildings, the Kordon resembled the modern waterfronts of European cities at that time.
Today, the Kordon remains lively at all hours of the day. It welcomes early morning walkers and joggers as well as people gathering to watch the sunset. Stylish cafés, restaurants, and bars along the promenade offer visitors the opportunity to relax and socialize while enjoying the cool breeze from the Aegean Sea. Especially in the evenings, the scent of sea salt combined with the city lights creates a unique and unforgettable atmosphere along the Kordon.
